HACKS YOU NEED TO KNOW AS YOU KITE&TRAVEL

BEFORE YOU GO - traveling with kite gear

Traveling with the huge board may seem like an obstacle, but trust me, it' s not that bad as it seems :)

Kiting is not soccer. You may need to travel with a bit more equipment. But it's worth it! (women's twintip kiteboard Barracuda)

Use skyscenner.com or other travel fare aggregator website to find the best (cheapest, faster, value for money) flight for yourself.

Money-saving tips while using Skyscanner:

Check the baggage allowance before you book your flight. Nathalie has 2x20kg for free and is ready to go!

Check the airlines

Once your flight consists of more than one flight, be careful. The cheapest tickets are usually provided by different airlines. That could mean different baggage allowances. (E.x. first flight is with low-cost airlines with no baggage allowance, the second flight with airlines which allows you to have 2x 20kg and the third allows only 1x 30kg).

In that case, it’ s cheaper to pay a few euros more for a bit more expensive ticket and fly with one airline. Like that you only check-in your board bag once at the beginning of the trip and you know how to pack your gear so you don' t pay extra fee.

Check baggage allowance

Most of the international airlines have 2 x 20 kg or 1 x 32kg baggage allowance. Make sure that you know what is the baggage allowance before you purchase the ticket. I always check with Skyscanner which has listed all airlines baggage allowance on one page.

Sometimes the cheapest option without bags is not the cheapest option in total with the kite bag. Once you know what’s your baggage allowance, you can plan to either pack two smaller bags or one big one.

MY TIP:

I recommend to always call the help desk and confirm the size of your board bag (especially if you travel with a directional board which is more than 150 cm long).

The employees are much more helpful 2 weeks before your flight rather than at the airport where you have no negotiation power and you're risking to pay ridiculous money for an extra kilogram.

Secret fun fact, which can save you money
The scales at the front decks while check-in usually weights only at the bottom of the scale. Place your board bag slightly aside so it touches the edges of the scale. This takes of 1-2 kg out of your total weight.

ON THE WAY - stay healthy& spend your time valuable

Stay hydrated

At the airport

Water at the airport is overpriced. Travel with an eco-friendly water bottle. Makes sure it’ s empty while safety check and refill by drinkable water (make sure it’ s drinkable) in the departure area.

During the flight

The stewardess offers you small drink 2-3 times in 9 hours flight. It’ s not enough. Ask for the water every hour or when you go to the bathroom. Even the low-cost airlines are obligated to give you a cup of water for free.

Stretch

At the airport

Instead of sitting in the departure area and playing with your phone. Find yourself a place to stretch or practice yoga. Here are a few stretches and yoga videos you can check.

During the flight

Go and stretch every hour or two when you go to the bathroom. Stretch your neck, back, knees…it is a game-changer.

Just as you wash your hands before eating, clear your mind before engaging with the world.

Meditate

Watching movies or playing games on the screen in front of you for 9 hours will not put you into good mind space. It’ s the perfect time to stay with yourself or meditate.

Work on yourself

Read, study, learn some phrases of the visiting country language

Sleep.

Try to get some sleep. This can be hard for some of us, but you can always try.

ON ARRIVAL - Cost saving tips as you arrive

Transportation from the airport

Using the taxi from the airport is the easiest but most expensive option as in most countries in Asia, Africa or even Europe overcharges you with tourist prices.

In case you are on the budget, you can find somebody who is traveling in the same direction and share the cost or use the following options.

Use the application like Uber, GoJek, Grab. If I’m not able to use their services, as I would have to wait too long, find out the price by asking the app and try to negotiate the taxi to a similar price.

Use public transport. Use airport Wi-Fi to download the Google map for the area so you know where and how to go even without the data later on the way. Search for a few tips about the transport from the airport on travel blogs and don’t hesitate to ask for guidance by the information desk on the arrivals.

This can save you a lot of money for a nice dinner and celebration of your first day.

Check blogs or ask other travelers about the local prices for basic food, commodities or bike rental.

Change and withdraw money wisely

ATM at the airport usually charges you more than the ones in the town.

The exchange rate at the airport is also less convenient than what you can find in the city. Be aware of it and decide what is best for you.

Stay connected for less

Buy a local sim card. You can use your WhatsApp, messenger and other applications but safe money for roaming or expensive data.

Have the most fabulous kite holiday!
